The Entire Country Of Sweden Is Now On Airbnb

Would you prefer the “Cozy Glade in Beech Forest” or a “Rocky Beach in Modern Scandinavian Style"?

Sweden has made its entire country available on the holiday rentals site.

The move is a creative ploy to promote “Allemansrätt,” the nation’s constitutionally protected “freedom to roam” any land in the Swedish countryside (with the exception of private gardens, land near a dwelling house, or land under cultivation). Visitors are welcome to walk, cycle, ride, ski, and camp for free anywhere they want, any time they want, as long it’s on public land.

“Allemansrätten – or the freedom to roam – is a principle protected by Swedish law that gives all people the right to be free in Swedish nature,” reads the listing. “In other words, Swedish nature isn’t just a piece of land with trees and lakes and cliffs – it’s a home with all the necessities and amenities that any great home should have. It’s a place where you can eat berries from the ground, sleep under the stars, swim in the lakes and roam freely. To make this home available for everyone, Sweden has listed the entire country on Airbnb.”

The page currently contains nine individual listings like “Cozy Glade in Beech Forest”, “Classic Lookout Point by Spectacular Mountains”, and “Rocky Beach in Modern Scandinavian Style.” Each one features a tongue-in-cheek profile in classic Airbnb style, a selection of photos with clever captions, and even reviews from happy travellers.

“Every lake is your infinity pool, every mountaintop your granite terrace, every meadow becomes a garden and every forest a pantry filled with mushrooms and berries,” boasts a grandiose statement from Airbnb. “Feel free to take a morning jog or bike ride across open fields or trek through challenging mountain terrain. Should you want an upgrade, you do not need to ask anyone, just find the best location that suits you and your mood.”

Sweden’s Airbnb listings are available 365 days a year, accommodate everyone, have unlimited beds, allow check-in “whenever”, and best of all, they’re probably the only listings on the entire site that won’t charge you a cent for your stay. Plan your visit here.
