What Is A Negroni Sbagliato? The Cocktail Taking Over TikTok

If you’re a regular TikTok scroller then you’ve almost definitely come across a video of two House of Dragons stars talking about their favourite drink, one of which is a Negroni Sbaligato.

The now-viral video shows House of Dragons star Olivia Cooke (Alicient Hightower) asking fellow actress Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra Targaryen) what their drink of choice is. With perfect enunciation, Emma replies, “A Negroni.” But while Olivia is responding with “I was going to say the same thing,” Emma interrupts to add “Sbagliato. With Prosecco in it.”

The video, posted to TikTok by the official HBO Max account, has racked up 1.7 million likes and 10,000 comments, which include “they said Prosecco in the most seductive way possible.” Since the clip was posted, it has been remixed by numerous other TikTok users and caused searches for “Negroni Sbagliato” to skyrocket on Google.

Emma’s drink of choice, a classic gin martini, hasn’t seemed to have received quite the same attention.

But what is a Negroni Spagliato and just how do you make one? Read on to find out.

What is a Negroni Sbagliato?

A Negroni Sbagliato is indeed a genuine cocktail and its name translates to “mistaken Negroni,” or “broken Negroni.” This is because the Negroni Sbagliato replaces to key ingredient of gin in a regular Negroni, with Prosecco. A regular Negroni, for those unaware, is cocktail made using equal parts gin, Campari and sweet vermouth.

The ingredients are combined in a mixing glass and mixed with ice until cold. Don’t, whatever you do, follow Stanley Tucci’s advice and shake it.

A Negroni Sbagliato is made in much the same way as a regular Negroni, in that use equal parts of each ingredient. However, because Prosecco is of course carbonated, you can’t mix it in the mixing glass.

The Negroni Sbagliato recipe is as follows:

  • In a mixing glass, add 1.5 ounces (45ml) of Campari and 1.5 ounces of sweet vermouth and mix with ice until cold.
  • Single strain over a large ice cube into a rocks glass. You can also serve a Negroni Sbagliato in a champagne flute, without ice, if you wish.
  • Top with 1.5 ounces of Prosecco. If you don’t have Prosecco then you can add sparkling wine.
  • Garnish with an orange twist.

Negroni Sbagliato History

According to Diffords Guide, Emma actually pronounces ‘Sbagliato’ wrong in the video. It should actually be pronounced, ‘spal-yacht-oh’, and is Italian for ‘mistake.’ It’s claimed the Negroni Sbagliato was first created in the late 1980s by bartender Mirko Stocchetti at the Bar Basso in Milan, Italy. He literally made the now classic cocktail by mistake, accidentally grabbing a bottle of sparkling wine instead of gin. He still tried his new concoction and thus the Negroni Sbagliato was born.
