The Las Vegas Grand Prix has today confirmed that the inaugural Formula 1 racing event held in this great American city will be officially opened by a star-studded musical spectacular… and everyone’s saying the same thing.

You know the old saying, “What happens in Vegas… gets broadcast around the world and in front of a live audience of more than 30,000 fans.”

For an iconic city that, throughout history, has been deified in popular culture, or just in the boys’ group chat, as one of the great late-night capitals of the world, we didn’t expect anything less from the world-class spectacular that is America’s great Sin City.

The inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix, held on 18 November local time, (19 November AEDT), will, for the first time, welcome the travelling Formula 1 circus to its neon-light-filled oasis in the Nevada desert.

Millions of dollars have been invested to transform the iconic Las Vegas strip, which will serve as the backdrop to one of the biggest races of the Formula 1 season; and certainly one of the biggest sporting events of the year.

Demand is expected to go through the perfectly polished marble-clad casino roof, and it’s led to some of the highest ticket prices of the season, as well as the Strip’s worst hotels hiking up their prices in anticipation of thousands of American Formula 1 fans descending on the Vegas Boulevard for a race weekend like no other.

And now, less than a month away from the big event, the Las Vegas Grand Prix, along with presenting partner the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA), have confirmed that the inaugural event will commence with a very American tradition…

Steve Aoki, Thirty Seconds To Mars and will.i.am will be joined by a host of world-famous musicians to perform some of their greatest hits in front of an expected 30,000 F1 fans for an extravagant Opening Ceremony to precede the racing action.

Theatrical appearances from Blue Man Group and Cirque du Soleil will support the musical acts in celebration of the illustrious history of the sport and in tribute to Las Vegas’ rich history of world-class entertainment.

“For the first-ever FORMULA 1 HEINEKEN SILVER LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX it was important for us to create an opening ceremony that balances the spirit of Las Vegas with the global excitement that Formula 1 and these incredible drivers bring to each host city,” Las Vegas Grand Prix, Inc. CEO Renee Wilm said.

“We are proud to be able to work with the very best in the entertainment production space to offer one of the most diverse line-ups of beloved musical superstars, which will officially launch the race week festivities.”

American fans took to X – formerly Twitter – to voice their excitement surrounding the announcement, anticipating a memorable night under the spectacular Vegas skyline; but there was a largely mixed response from Formula 1 purists who argued that the Opening Ceremony will inevitably detract from the world-class racing action.

Beyond the pure racing action, the Las Vegas Grand Prix will be a celebration of the culture and excitement that only a city like Las Vegas can offer. The neon lights, the vibrant atmosphere, and the high-energy ambience of the celebrated Strip will provide a unique and unforgettable backdrop to the greatest race on earth.

And in a year that’s felt, at times, predictable, you can be sure that the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix will be the stand-out event of the Formula 1 season.
