Grab yourself a slice of the good stuff at Sydney's best pizza places.

Best Pizza Sydney

Looking for the best pizza in Sydney? Then you’ll want to check out our round-up of the 16 best pizza restaurants to be found in Sydney CBD and the surrounding suburbs.

Sydney’s pizza restaurants deliver huge and occasionally unusual flavours from their wood-fired ovens that are so authentic you’d be forgiven for thinking they were shipped directly from Italy. With such an expansive food scene, however, seeking out Sydney’s best pizza is not for the faint-hearted. Fret not, for we here at DMARGE have conducted our own in-depth research to bring you the definitive list of the best pizza in Sydney.

All of them, naturally, serve up a mean Margherita, but if you’re feeling adventurous they’re more than happy to offer some new and unique flavour combinations, and yes, vegetarians and vegans are catered to as well. Hell, they’ll even scatter some pineapple on top if that’s your fancy.

Lucio Pizzeria

East Village 2/4 Defries Ave, Zetland, 2017; Republic 2 Court Yard, Shop 1/248 Palmer St, Darlinghurst, 2010

Lucio Pizzeria

Lucio pizzeria started life in Darlinghurst and has since spawned another larger venue in Zetland thanks to its monumental popularity – the pizza has even been crowned as the best in Australia. It’s all about traditional pizzas and antipasto dining at Lucio’s with produce that literally hangs from the ceilings. Sit close to the chefs’ quarters at their larger eatery and you can witness traditional Naples-style pizza and pasta making. The rage here is their imported Buffalo Mozarella.

“Best pizza ever had in Australia! It feels like being back in Italy . Lucio is so friendly and smiling . The place outside feels like an home away from home. 100% Recommended!”

Da Mario

Shop 1/36 Morley Ave, Rosebery, 2018

Da Mario

For a spot of beautifully prepared Italian grub served up in a trendy industrial room with hanging plants, head over Da Mario in Roseberry south of Sydney CBD. They do a bloody amazing wood-fired pizza here which is a given since Da Mario is member 153 of the ‘Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana’ – the first Italian joint in Australia to be awarded it.

“We regularly have the pizza here and whilst they are different every time in shape and size they are always delicious.”

La Coppola

152 Redfern St, Redfern, 2016

La Coppola

Walk down the main strip of Redfern and you’ll find a little shop that stands out like Nonno Pepe trying to rock drop crotch pants. We don’t know what that means exactly but their traditional pizza is insanely good for a place that’s a hole in the wall trying to hide a massive wood-fired oven. The pizza output here is Sicilian-styled and the flavours are big. Make sure to book ahead or get there earlier as there are only around five tables at most.

“The pizzas here are absolutely delicious! The restaurant is tiny, but buzzing, and there is a clear reason why people love to come here.”

Matteo

29 Bay St, Double Bay, 2028; 20 Bond Street, Sydney, NSW, 2000

Matteo

So here’s the story. Some of eastern Sydney’s most respected names in food and drink got together to open a place serving up simple Italian food accompanied by a massive wood fire pizza oven. The rest they would say is history, a history built on a charred soft base and top-notch ingredients.

Clearly, Matteo did something right, as the pizzeria was able to open a second venue right in the heart of Sydney CBD. Best get down there and see what all the fuss is about, right?

“Matteo is the new go-to for a night out with friends. Great food with an awesome, buzzing vibe.”

Rosso Pomodoro

360 Darling Street, Balmain, 2041;  94 Bronte Rd, Bondi Junction NSW 2041

Rosso Pomodoro

The backstreets of Balmain have long held a champion in Sydney’s pizza scene. Rosso Pomodoro’s secret is in their dough which is fermented for 72 hours, which, when compared to the standard 24-48 hours results in a base which is light yet chewy with a crust loaded with flavour.

Balmain doesn’t quite cut it for you? No stress, Rosso Pomodoro has a second venue in Bondi Junction, catering to the Eastern Suburbs crowd. You won’t regret it.

“We have been fans on Rossopomodoro for many years and now get to bring our teenage children to one of Balmain’s finest Italian restaurants.”

Ristorante Papa

145 Ramsay St, Haberfield NSW 2045

Ristorante Papa

What started as a humble patisserie churning out legendary cheesecakes in the heart of Haberfield has grown into a fully-fledged Italian restaurant armed with a wood-fired rotating pizza oven. Ristorante Papa is the brainchild of Pasticceria Papa which offers the authentic taste of Italy using the finest produce. Needless to say, their pizza and pasta is as good as their iconic desserts.

“We visited on a friend’s recommendation and were not disappointed. We had two of the best pizza’s we’ve ever had.”

Al Taglio

102-104 Albion St, Surry Hills, 2010

Al Taglio

Enjoy gourmet Italian in all of its authenticity with the flair of open-planned dining in Surry Hills. Al Taglio isn’t a big eatery but it makes up for it with regional Italian pizzas made the traditional way. Expect imported Italian cured meats, cheeses, organic wines and craft beers. There’s also a decent vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free selection for the plant-based pizza lover.

“Best pizzeria in Sydney with no doubt, I’ve been there several times now and always happy to go back!!”

Via Napoli

628 Crown St, Surry Hills, 2010; 141 Longueville Rd, Lane Cove, 2066; 64-68 Gladesville Rd, Hunters Hill, 2110

Via Napoli

Via Napoli, also found in Sydney’s Surry Hill (as well as Lane Cove and Hunters Hill), is known for their metre-long pizzas and lively Italian atmosphere but that doesn’t take away from the fact that they make some pretty decent pizzas with quality ingredients of the Neapolitan variety.

“The pizza was heavenly – and the tomato base was the one you always wish for on every pizza.”

Vacanza Pizzeria

414 Bourke St, Surry Hills, 2010; 261 Bronte Road, Waverley, 2024

Vacanza Pizzeria

Thick crust, pillowy dough and more generous toppings makes Vacanza the place to be for the truly famished. The lines do get long but lucky for you there are two locations, one in Surry Hills in the heart of Sydney CBD, and another in Waverley, a little further out..

“I can only really comment on the pizza at Vacanza’s. It is simply the best pizza I’ve had in Australia. Nothing in the eastern suburbs of Sydney comes close.”

Gigi Pizzeria

379 King St, Newtown, 2042

Gigi Pizzeria

Proper vegan pizza has arrived in Sydney and it’s not half bad. We stumbled on this place by accident by following the huge queues and thinking it was a standard pizza joint. And then we saw the menu and were worried. Alas, we had nothing to worry about. Whilst slightly pricier than the conventional pizza, Gigi’s makes it over the line thanks to its careful selection of plant-based ingredients which doesn’t lose out on taste.

“If you’ve ever thought about enjoying vegan pizza as it was regular pizza, THIS IS THE PLACE. Not only 100% italiana, but also it’s flavours are amazing!!!”

Queen Margherita of Savoy

9/2-8 Surf Rd, Cronulla, 2230

Queen Margherita of Savoy

Another member of the coveted Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana is this southern beaches pizza joint. It’s a symbol of traditional Neapolitan pizza done right according to old school manuals. This covers everything from the calibre of ingredients to the dough preparation. The winner? You.

“Delicious food, flavour +++ made with beautiful ingredients. Small local, very inviting.”

Verace Pizzeria

7 Khartoum Rd, Macquarie Park, 2113

Verace Pizzeria

Verace Pizzeria is the winner of the World Pizza Championship Australia and that means their Nepolitana wood-fired pizzas are on point when it comes to authenticity. Verace holds Certificate 596 from the ‘Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana’ so their pizzas need to abide by the strict rules of authentic Napolitana pizza. Go for the truffle oil pizza and remember to book in advance.

“Literally the best Pizza ever”

Rosso Antico

2/52-60 Enmore Rd, Newtown, 2042

Rosso Antico

The cultural eat street that is Enmore Road is hotly contested in Sydney and one of the Italian joints living up to that expectation is Rosso Antico. Charred crusted pizzas with just the right amount of puff slide out of the wood-fired oven like clockwork here.

“I’ve been coming here since it opened, and its just got better and better over time. The food has always been great.”

Ziggy Sawdust (TripAdvisor)

Caffe Roma

Diners can kick it old school with Caffe Roma in Potts Point. The family behind the restaurant have run the place for more than 30 years and it’s become quite the institution. The pizza is what will really draw in the crowds though thanks to their use of fine organic produce and big flavours in every slice.

Pocket Pizza Manly

A taste of Little Italy of New York City…in the heart of Northern Beaches Manly. Identity crisis? Perhaps. But the pizza is good and the vibes better for a place this tiny. And you can forget about tradition or pizza certificates here as the pizzas ditch the classics in favour of the creative. And that’s exactly why it deserves to be here.
