Since making his Met Gala debut in 2015, Formula 1 driver and fashion enthusiast Lewis Hamilton has been a fixture at the annual fund-raising event held for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City.

As each racing weekend rolls around during the Formula 1 calendar, Hamilton fans are eagerly waiting to see which designer brand he has opted to wear during his now signature entrances to the F1 circuit. But it’s off the track that Hamilton has made major inroads into the world of fashion, attending, what he considers to be, the biggest fashion event in the world: The Met Gala.

Lewis Hamilton Met Gala 2015
It almost seems like an age ago, but Lewis Hamilton’s first Met Gala was in 2015, when the theme was “China: Through the Looking Glass.” During that time, Hamilton’s passion for fashion had reached an excited furore and the Mercedes driver wore a black and blue suit designed by Topshop… the ladies still seemed to like it.

At the 2016 Met Gala, Hamilton wore a black tuxedo with a bow tie from Dolce and Gabbana for the “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” theme.

The 2018 Met Gala celebrated “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” and for his appearance, Lewis Hamilton arrived in an all-white Tommy Hilfiger suit with Loriblu boots.

Hilfiger designed for Hamilton again in 2019 as the F1 world champion donned a black suit with matching trousers in a flaunting zig-zag design. He paired his attire with black Cuban heel boots.

In 2021, Hamilton didn’t just show up for the Met Gala wearing a black tuxedo with a calf-length white lace shirt by Kenneth Nicholson but he also bought an entire table so that Nicholson and fellow emerging Black designers Edvin Thompson and Jason Rembert, who under ordinary circumstances wouldn’t have been able to afford to be at the event, could be there with him.
“We’re living in a time where diversity and inclusion are so important, and that’s why I started this organization within my own sport,” Hamilton told Vogue. “I realised it’s very similar in the fashion industry. A lot of young brands and designers don’t have the same opportunities, so that’s what really set me off.”
“The Met is the biggest fashion event of the year,” he continued. “For this theme, I wanted to create something that was meaningful and would spark a conversation, so that when people see us all together, it will put these Black designers at the top of people’s minds.”

The Silver Arrows driver wasn’t able to attend in 2022 because the event coincided with the Miami Grand Prix week. He missed the Met Gala again this year due to the busy F1 schedule. He however followed the show because he reposted his friend Serena Williams’ picture from the event.
