Who Is Ryan Gosling?

Ryan Gosling is a Canadian actor who was born on November 12th 1980 in London, Ontario. His parents are Thomas Ray Gosling and Donna Gosling, who are of French Canadian descent. Ryan has an older sister, Mandi. His parents were also Mormons, but Ryan has said himself he couldn’t identify Mormonism.

Ryan’s parents divorced when he was 13 and due to him living with his mother and sister, said he was brought up to “think like a girl.”

Ryan Gosling went to various schools when he was young, including Gladstone Public School, Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School and Lester B. Pearson High School. Ryan said he was bullied at school and didn’t have any friends until he reached his mid-teens. Other complications in his schooling years including being suspended for throwing knives at other students and being evaluated for ADHD, although he was deemed to not have it.

Ryan found a love and passion for performing in front of audiences at a young age too. He took part in ballet, sang at weddings with his sister and even performed an Elvis Presley tribute act. He dropped out of school at 17 to pursue an acting career.

While he was still at school, Ryan Gosling secured himself a two-year contract with the Disney Channel for its revival of The Mickey Mouse Club. He appeared alongside the likes of Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera. Ryan returned to Canada in 1995 and began appearing in various Canadian television shows and in 1998, when he was 18, he flew to New Zealand to star at the titular character in the TV show, Young Hercules.

He then quit acting in television shows to pursue roles in films.

Ryan Gosling’s first leading film role came in the 2001 movie, The Believer. While the film wasn’t commercially successful, Ryan’s performance was received well by critics. Ryan next secured a role in the 2002 movie Murder by Number alongside Sandra Bullock. Once again, the movie didn’t perform particularly well at the box office, but Gosling’s performance was once again praised by critics.

The Notebook

Ryan Gosling hit the big time when he was cast in the 2004 romantic drama The Notebook, opposite Rachel McAdams. The movie was a commercial and critical success, and many critics once again praised Ryan’s performance and that of his co-star, McAdams. Ryan Gosling won four Teen Choice Awards and an MTV Movie Award for his performance in the movie.

For his performance in the 2006 movie, Half Nelson, Ryan Gosling received his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, with critics yet again praising his performance, despite not thinking much of the movie as a whole.

2011 proved to be an incredibly successful year for Ryan Gosling, following a short hiatus taken from acting. One of the standout movies of 2011 included Drive, which saw Ryan Gosling play a Hollywood stunt performer who moonlights as a getaway driver. In reviews of his performance, Ryan Gosling was compared to the likes to Steve McQueen and Marlon Brando.

Ryan Gosling also starred in Crazy, Stupid, Love and The Ides of March, in 2011 which both earned him Golden Globe Award nominations.

Following a few more successful and not-so-successful performances and movies, Ryan Gosling took another break from acting in 2013.

Ryan Gosling certainly made the right decision to return to acting in 2015, as it generated a slew of successful movies, including The Big Short, which was nominated for a Best Picture award at the 2016 Oscars and The Nice Guys, which saw Ryan star opposite Russell Crowe.

Ryan won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his performance in the musical movie, La La Land, which saw him star opposite Emma Stone (whom he’d also starred alongside in 2013’s Gangster Squad, and 2011’s Crazy, Stupid, Love). He also received his second Academy Award nomination for this role.

Ryan Gosling was also cast to star in the lead role in Blade Runner 2049, a sequel to 1982’s Blade Runner. Harrison Ford co-starred in the movie, reprising his role as Rick Deckard from the original movie.

Ryan’s latest movie, The Gray Man, is currently in theatres.

Ryan Gosling is currently filming the live-action adaptation of Barbie alongside Australian actress Margot Robbie. He has also come out to say the only superhero he’d ever play is Ghost Rider.

Ryan is a keen advocate for various charities, including PETA, and also helped out with the clean-up efforts following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
